Department
Science
Description
Marine Science is a yearlong course that will build upon the students understanding of biological concepts previously learned. Emphasis will be made on using investigative techniques to explore the chemical, physical, geological, and biological aspects of the marine environment. Students will not only have an understanding of the world's ocean, its organisms' behaviors and adaptations, and structures and functions that exist throughout all of the marine environment, but they will also take a close look at how humans have affected and changed the marine environment over time. Students learn how energy flows and cycles throughout the Earth and analyze the interrelationships of the various organisms involved. The hands-on laboratory activities include, but are not limited to, demonstrations of geological concepts, examination of physical characteristics - such as waves - in the ocean, and examination of anatomical structures and its relation to the physiological adaptations of an organism. Students are required to participate in a variety of dissections representative of marine invertebrates and vertebrates.

Assignment

Create a 4-part chart in your notes for bony fish: movement, reproduction, senses, and respiration. This should be covered in pages 307-310 in your textbook.

Due:

Assignment

Please complete the section review for 12-1 and 12-2  (1-3). Choose 8 words from the vocabulary list at the end of the chapter to define. Your best bet is to chose words you are least familiar with.

Due:

Easy as 3,2,1:
THREE (or more) organisms from at least TWO different phyla we covered this semester (invertebrates) should be combined into ONE organism and presented in two ways.
1) there should be a visual depiction with color and detail on an 8 by 14 inch sheet of paper.
2) there should be a verbal description of how the organism would meet life needs: specifically habitat, diet, and defense.

Due:

Assignment

Summarize the following systems/ life functions for crustaceans. Reproduction, ingestion/digestion, respiration, defense, and nervous system.

Due:

Assignment

We will be constructing a bifold foldable with the following sections:
1. Lobsters  2. Crabs  3. Shrimp  4. Barnacles
Make sure its done by test day (block day).

Due:

Due:

Assignment

Finish notes on bivalves. Continue from where we left off in class and make sure to review: ingestion/digestion, movement, and reproduction in bivalves. We will be dissecting a bivalve next week.

Due:
