Semester Assessment:
Convince someone of the necessity of learning Latin.
Powerpoint Presentation showing
1) Beauty of Latin (provide one example of this)
Latin is not based on word order, but endings.
Find an example like this and give all of the grammar for an example of beautiful Latin word order.
Alma Redemptoris Mater
Sweet Mother of the redeemer
Alma – feminine adjective modifying MATER – sweet, kind
Mater, matris (3rd declension, fem) = Mother
Redemptor, redemptoris (3rd declension, masculine)= redeemer; redemptoris is genitive here.
Here Latin PAINTS PICTURES with WORDS: The Redeemer is inside Mary.
English is simple = Everything is word order.
Translate, give the grammar for this example: Sancta Dei Genitrix. Parse every word and show the beauty of this phrase.
2) Practicality of Latin – Find examples and pictures of how Latin elucidates etymology and helps us to understand Law, Medicine, Science and History. Provide one example for Law, one for medicine, one for science, and one for history.
Furtively – (furtim)
Auditory – (audio, audire)
LAW, MEDICINE
Pro bono – law is done for free, for charity
For a good
HISTORY – semper fidelis, e pluribus unum
3) Glory of Latin:
Show how Latin sharpens your memory, your grammar (declensions) and deductive reasoning; it makes your English better (WHO, WHOM?) Translate a Latin prayer to show how this is. You can translate the Ave Maria or the Gloria Patri.
Show two examples of how knowing about Greek and Roman goddesses helps you to interpret ART and Catholic Art.
(ex. Last Judgment – CHARON – ferryman to Hades)
Convince someone of the necessity of learning Latin.
