Academic Decathlon: Stars and Tsars!
The Mary Star Academic Decathlon class has started gloriously with 30 students vying for this year's two teams. For those unfamiliar with high school Academic Decathlon, it is first and foremost a class which comprises ten disparate disciplines. Students are divided up into three sub-groups: honors (GPAs of 3.75 to 4.00), scholastic (3.00 - 3.74) and varsity (below 3.00). Those students who make our teams in December will eventually compete in January and February against many other private schools in Southern California. Last year Mary Star placed a remarkable 4th place out of 30 other teams. This year we will strive to achieve our lofty goals established in the previous years of successful competition.

This year's theme is Russia and the novel is Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. The novel is no easy read as this Russian epics tops out over 500 pages! The Decathlon class has only one semester to master not only the novel but those nine other subjects as well. Led by Mr. Erb, their coach, the team looks forward to the challenge. Go Stars and Tsars!
