ADVANCED PLACEMENT UNITED STATES HISTORY * Prerequisite: “B” or better in Honors World History and Honors British Literature, or “A” in World History and British Literature; plus departmental approval. Students will be required to complete a significant summer assignment assessed immediately at the beginning of the school year. Grade 11 1 Year Advanced Placement United States History provides an intellectual journey through America’s past, examining pathways to the present. Students analyze the history and development of the nation, paying particular attention to the American experience in terms of democracy and free enterprise. AP U.S. History students explore America’s identity, diversity and culture while balancing factual knowledge with critical analysis. Equivalent to a college introductory course, AP U.S. History requires rigorous effort. Assessment of historical materials--including self-guided research--underscores fundamental elements of the course: the ability to weigh evidence, interpret logically and argue persuasively. Coursework stresses persuasive essay writing and prepares students to take the AP U.S. History examination offered by the College Board. Passing grades on the exam afford students college credit, the amount of credit varying with each university. All students enrolled in AP U.S. History are required to take the AP U.S. History examination in May.

THIS IS JUST A CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE WORKING ON YOUR KEY TERMS AND FOLLOWING ALONG IN THE BOOK. PLEASE POST WHAT YOU HAVE...WHETHER IT IS 10 TERMS OR 20, THAT IS OK. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING AHEAD SO IT ISN'T TOO MUCH AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.
Due:
I have updated the due date to Thursday to give you enough time to complete this assignment. Please follow the AP Format. ACE / TEA each paragraph! 3 very good, solid paragraphs where you analyze! Basically 2 questions, 1 on the Harlem Renaissance and 1 on 1920's culture/economics.
Question 1 is based on the excerpt below (found on pg. 494 in your book)
"Through his artistic efforts the Negro is smashing this immemorial stereotype faster than he has ever done through any other method he has been able to use...He is impressing upon the national mind the conviction that he is an active and important force in American life; that he is a creature; that he has given as well as received; that he is a potential giver of larger and richer contributions...
"I do not think it too much to say that through artistic achievement the Negro has found a means of getting at the very core of the prejudice against him by challenging the Nordic superiority complex. A great deal has been published in this decade of "renaissance."
- JAMES WELDON JOHNSON, POET AND SECRETARY OF THE NAACP, HARPER'S, 1928
1. Using the excerpt, answer A, B, and C.
A. Briefly explain ONE way the Harlem Renaissance supported the point of view in the excerpt.
B. Briefly explain ONE example of an African American artists' achievement from the era that would support this excerpt.
C. Briefly explain what the author most likely meant by "the very core of prejudice" faced by African Americans in the 1920's.
Question 2 is based on the excerpts below (found on pg. 495 in your book)
"I couldn't forgive him or like him, but I saw that what he had done was, to him, entirely justified. It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that keep them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."
- F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, NOVELIST, THE GREAT GATSBY, 1925
"Never was a decade snuffed out so quickly as the 1920's. The stock market crash was taken as a judgment pronounced on the whole era, and in the grim days of depression, the 1920's were condemned as a time of irresponsibility and immaturity."
-WILLIAM E. LEUCHTENBURG, HISTORIAN, THE PERILS OF PROSPERITY, 1959
2. Using the excerpts, answer A, B, and C.
A. Briefly explain ONE social development in the 1920's that supports the Fitzgerald quote.

Attached below is an SAQ...please write 5 paragraphs (into, 3 answer paragraphs, conclusion) on the topic.
“If American sectionalism entered a new phase in 1846, it was neither because North and South clashed for the first time nor because the issue of slavery for the first time assumed importance. As early as the Confederation, North and South had been at odds.... Once the government under the Constitution went into effect, bitter sectional conflicts raged.... This sectional rivalry tended to become institutionalized in the opposing [political] organizations....No matter which region embraced nationalism and which particularism, sectional conflict remained a recurrent phenomenon.”
David M. Potter, The Impending Crisis, 1848-1861, published in 1976
“The Civil War represented an utter and unique breakdown of the normal democratic political process. When one section of the country refused to accept the decision of a presidential election, secession and the ensuing war became the great exception to the American political tradition of compromise. The rending of the nation was the one time that conflict seemed too irrepressible, too fundamental, to be contained within common consensual boundaries. Because the war was such an anomaly, both participants and later historians have been fascinated with its causes since the shooting started.”
Michael F. Holt, , published in 1978
1. Using the excerpts, answer (a), (b), and (c).
a) Briefly describe ONE major difference between Potter’s and Holt’s historical interpretations of the Civil War.
b) Briefly explain how ONE specific historical event or development during the period 1786-1861 that is not explicitly mentioned in the excerpts could be used to support Potter’s interpretation.
c) Briefly explain how ONE specific historical event or development during the period 1786-1861 that is not explicitly mentioned in the excerpts could be used to support Holt’s interpretation.
