Academic Counseling- Seniors Class of 2022 Assignments

Thank you for your attention this past week. It's time to start culminating your high school career as we enter your last quarter. Please complete the attached form and re-submit  as needed. This will inform how we will complete the graduation program in May. Please let me know if you have any questions on how to complete. 

This $1,000 scholarship  celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Lions Club is open to seniors who have shown a commitment to service in the local community. Essays will be reviewed by members of the SP Lions Club scholarship committee. Please submit entries by April 29th.

Attached you will find the application for the ILWU Scholarship Award. There will be three recipients of $500 scholarships at MSHS. Please read carefully the eligibility requirements, application steps, and selection criteria. Please let me know if you have any questions. All applications are due by Tuesday, April 26th. Submit your applications to the counseling office or the front office. Winners will be presented their award at our Senior Academic Awards Ceremony. Only children of ILWU 13 are ineligible. Children of other workers unions may still apply. 

The SPGC is providing $2,000 in scholarship money for a student who can complete a convincing essay about how they are invested in addressing environmental challenges and using natural resources responsibly. In addition to this, applicants must: 
- plan to attend college/university this Fall 2022
- major in an environmentally related field (see flyer for examples). 


The due date is April 26th by 3:00pm and you should submit your application and essay to the counseling office. This is a local scholarship, so you will be competing against a relatively small pool of students. I have paper copies of the application if you prefer.  Best of luck!

The Rotary Club of San Pedro is offering three generous scholarships to high school students in San Pedro. Please see the link below and apply to one or more of the scholarships, as appropriate. Below you can find a description of all three scholarships. The page linked below also has links to fill out the Google Form required for each scholarship. The deadline for all three is April 12th at 5:00pm. Please let me know if you need help filling out the application(s). 


The Ernie Houser Scholarship
The Ernie Houser Fund is a vocational scholarship initiated by a former member of our club, Mr. Ernie Houser.  This helpful  is awarded annually to one student planning to attend college or a trade school and is pursuing a career in a vocational field (i.e., nursing, electrician, plumber, beautician, etc).

The Joe Viola Memorial Scholarship
Joseph “Joe” Viola was a member of the Rotary Club of San Pedro and a lifelong Educator. He retired as Principal of San Pedro High School in 1994. Upon his passing in 2018, his family established this generous memorial scholarship in his name. 
This scholarship recognizes that there is more to success than a high GPA and that students who may not be at the top of their class academically also deserve the opportunity for success.
The  and is awarded to a student in the San Pedro/Harbor community who will be furthering their education at a Community College, University, or Vocational/Trade School.  

The Uncle Joe Evans Fund
This scholarship fund was established by a bequest of Joseph G. Evans, M.D., a San Pedro Rotarian in memory of his wife, Mildred. 
The  is available first to the children of present or past members of the San Pedro Rotary Club and second to any student of San Pedro. It is open to any student in primary school, high school, college, university, advanced study, artistic or cultural studies, exchange programs, or the American Field Service.

See the attached application page to apply for a $500 scholarship offered to MSHS seniors only. The application and essay (one page) must be completed and brought to my office by Thursday, March 31st. YOUR NAME CANNOT BE INCLUDED ON THE APPLICATION ITSELF. Instead, email me with a request for an ID# and I can send it to you to include on the application. I will provide you GPA, class rank, and signature when you submit your application. Best of luck. 

Please review this scholarship from a local philanthropic organization. They will be offering over $6000 in scholarships to local seniors. The due date is March 29th. Application packets should be left with me in the counseling office.  Please see me if you have any questions. 

$1,000 to $3,000 scholarships available through the local National Charity League chapter.
Please see the invitation letter, requirements, and application attached for this local scholarship. The deadline is in March, but there are several steps involved so start now! Let me know if you have any questions.

This Catholic University is in the state of Ohio. Presenter will give information about admission requirements, programs available at the university, and financial aid. All grade levels are welcome. Please fill out the attached Google Form

Sandpipers has provided financial assistance to college-bound students since 1941 and is the oldest continuing aid program in the South Bay. For the 2021-2022 school year, Sandpipers awarded more than $300,000 to 55 college students (Freshmen – Senior years). Each student received a minimum of $500 with some receiving as much as $10,000 for the school year. This amount is based on their outstanding financial need from their FAFSA report.


High school seniors living in the South Bay (both citizens and eligible non-citizens as defined by the U.S. Department of Education) are eligible to apply for a Sandpipers Scholarship for the 2022-23 school year.  Detailed eligibility requirements are stated below.

All applications are due on Monday, January 31, 2022 at 5 PM, no exceptions.  Please advise your students to submit their applications early in case of tech issues or other unforeseen delays.

To keep your college applications and offers of admission organized, you may use the attached template. In the spring, I will be asking for a list of schools that have offered admission and where you have committed to for Fall 2022. This will be for the graduation program.

Students interested in pursuing a degree in fashion, interior design, graphic design, merchandising, or other related majors can sign up for the visit from FIDM's representative on Wed. November 10th at 9:30AM. See the attached flyer for more information. Fill out the Google form indicating your interest in attending.

Students interested in being a part of a presentation from the USMC should indicate their interest by: 1) Filling out the attached Google Form  2) Having parents complete the permission slip attached. The presentation is on November 9th at 9:00 am here on campus. 

Marymount California University is a Catholic university in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Based in the liberal arts tradition and inspired by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, the university awards associate, bachelor's, and graduate degrees. "Academically excellent, passionately Catholic". A representative from Franciscan University will be on campus on Monday the 18th to talk about the school and answer any questions about admission, financial aid, and programs available. Please register using the Google Form attached.

Look over the following materials to get more insight on the FAFSA. Included are a "FAFSA coach" and a video on calculating the actual cost of college. Make sure you are completing the FAFSA application accurately and completely to get as much assistance as you are entitled to. The average amount of aid awarded per applicant is $3,900.00.

Whether you have started completing the FAFSA or not, you are invited to get instructions/tips from an expert. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. Your best bet is to attend with your parents, especially if they are completing the form for/with you. You must have a Zoom account to join.

Use the template below to complete a list of achievements and activities. Even if you don't think you'll be requesting a letter of recommendation for college applications, you should complete the assignment in case scholarship, internship, or job opportunities present themselves. If I have a copy on file, I can share with my colleagues in case they reach out to me instead of you when trying to write a letter of recommendation. Make sure to change the information on the template to reflect your own information.
