Instruction in English 9 introduces students to reading and writing at the high school level. Students develop comprehension and critical thinking skills through analysis of all major literary genres. Students develop writing skills while mastering the basic principles of grammar, vocabulary building and construction of sentences, paragraphs and essays. English 9 instruction establishes appreciation for literature and grammatical competence while enhancing communication skills.

For 15 points...

Make a book cover for your SSR book! Your book cover must focus on a specific symbol from your book. If you are unsure of what a symbol for your book is at this point in your reading, you may look it up. In addition to this, you must write a detailed paragraph explaining how your book cover showcases the symbol you chose, and why this symbol is important to your novel.

To get the full 15 points, your book cover must be detailed, have a lot of effort put into it, and your paragraph must be grammatically correct and in complete sentences!

For 10 points...

Think about the concept of Hubris! Write two detailed paragraphs discussing a character from a novel, movie, or television show, and how their excessive pride causes their downfall.

 

To receive full credit, your two paragraphs must be detailed and typed with few to no grammatical errors.

    • Must be addressed to me with an appropriate salutation (Example: Dear Ms. Hanley,)

  • Think of your favorite book. Write one paragraph where you discuss the novel’s theme, one paragraph where you discuss the climax of the novel, and one paragraph where you describe the setting of the novel. You will be writing three paragraphs total. Paragraphs must be detailed with no spelling or grammar errors to receive full credit. Paragraphs may be typed or handwritten.
 
Option #2 (For 5 Points):
  • Think of your favorite book. Choose one Round Character and one Flat Character from that novel. Write one paragraph for each character where you explain why one character is Flat and one character is Round. You will be writing two paragraphs total. Paragraphs must be detailed with no spelling or grammar errors to receive full credit. Paragraphs may be typed or handwritten.

Based on the summaries of the books that we have reviewed, choose which novel you would be the most interested in reading. Write a paragraph that details why you would want to read this novel - what sounds the most interesting about it to you? We will begin in class today, and this will be due first thing in class on Tuesday or Wednesday (depending on your block schedule)!

Have your "About the Author" page turned into your class folder at the beginning of the period on Friday, 9/23 (most of you completed this in class, but everyone needs to include a photograph of themselves on it).

In the top left corner, you will have your personal statement. Include your goals, hopes, and dreams for the future.
In the top right corner, you will have your “have-do-be” section. Include all you want to have, all you want to do, and all you want to be.
In the lower left corner, you will have your inspirations. Include people, ideas, music, books, or quotes that inspire you.
In the lower right corner, you will have five little known facts about you!
This is due Friday, 8/23! We will finish most of it in class, it is your job to print out a picture of you to put in the middle for homework!
