Peer Reviewing a Literature Review (and Intro)
****FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT, YOU WILL SUBMIT THE COMPLETED FORM OF THE PAPER YOU PEER EDITED**
Rules and Procedure for Peer Revision Assignment:
Remain constructive in your written and verbal communication with your peer during this process.
Read through the entire paper first.
Move row-by-row during revision and highlight accordingly:
- Writing with language that indicates a specific topic
- Writing that provides clarity to the audience regarding the topic
- Writing that outlines paraments or “GAP” language
- Connecting phrases that work to build explicit relationships between topic and prior research
- Refrences to relevant, credible, scholarly works
- Varying perspectives clearly defines for the audience
Identify the work being requested from each peer revision row in your peer’s academic paper.
Copy and paste the requested information into each table. Do NOT cut your peer’s paper.
If you cannot find the work being requested, highlight the heading of that row and provide constructive commentary on how the student could fix this issue within their paper. Remember: Your ignorance of the topic/discipline should not hinder your ability to understand the paper. You need to make notes of any terminology used by your peer that you do not understand.

For this 1st checkpoint, you will be sharing your Academic Paper including the: Title Page, Introduction and/or Literature Review. Remember, College Board groups the Introduction and Literature in one specific rubric row, rather than two.
How do we submit "chunks" of our paper? What's the process?
Step 1: Submit your Academic Paper Google Doc
Step 2: I will check it in for a completion grade (combined, an Introduction AND Literature Review can run from 600-1,000 words combined) Simple concept: Half effort/execution will receive half credit.
Step 3: If for what ever reason submitting your "working" Academic Paper Doc interferes with the workability of your "original" doc in your AP Research folder, you can retract your submission once a grade is checked in. Just be sure to type in the private comments..."retracting my doc!"
Keep in mind some helpful tips when writing your Introduction and Literature Reviews:
An Introduction -->
- Lays the foundation for the study
- Provides context / Clarifies the problem
- Analyzes why your study is appropriate
- Describes why your study is capable of solving the problem
A Literature Review -->
- Shows studies similar to your specific inquiry
- Explicitly connects a topic of inquiry to relevant scholarly works of varying perspectives (and puts them in conversation with one another)
- Logically explains how the topic of inquiry addresses a gap

In discussing the METHOD section of your paper, and looking at the example of a Content Analysis, there are required steps that each of you will need to take in order to complete your individual research.
The attached Research Method Organizer will be filled out AFTER you conduct your research. In addition, attach any work (Docs, tables, Sheets, etc) that you used in your research process.
Remember, the Method section requires two things: a method that ALIGNS with your Research Question and that your method process is described in such detail than it can be replicated by anyone who actively reads your paper. This assignment prepares you for this section of the Academic Paper.
Due January 13th
**I will be available via email over break for any help you may need.
RESUBMIT by Friday, 1/22 after edit changes has been made.

The Inquiry Proposal Form is a required form designed by College Board for AP Research students. This document serves as a true proposal of your research question and overall research design. You will be given individual research time (IRT) for a good portion of the form but you are still expected to fine tune, research, and complete further at home.
**You cannot begin writing your Academic Papers until your Inquiry Proposal is approved. Keep in mind that the IPF may be returned with some adjustments to be made--then will be resubmitted for approval.**

Attached is a spreadsheet to help organize your sources as you prepare to begin the Literary Review writing process.
The 'Organizing Your Sources' spreadsheet highlights the following:
- Type Resource - Electronic, Book, Journal, etc.
- Citation (APA) - For help --> https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html
- Summary - summary of the entry...check back to your Annotated Bibliography for this!
- Quotes - direct quotes that you would use in your Academic Paper
- Ranking of Reference - this helps you rank the importance of your sources
- Connections to other theorists/players - this is a critical component in your Literature Review. Constructing the meaning of multiple sources, mixed with your own hypothesis, situates yourself within the scholarly conversation and identifies the gap (that's where you come in!).
- Method Used in Study - **This is for research-based scholarly sources--which should be a bulk of your sources.
- Year published - currency in many conversations is critical importance
You have complete freedom in the layout, keys used, formatting--spreadsheets provide ENDLESS opportunities to organize!
We will work on this in class on Monday, 11/16, too.
For this assignment, a minimum of 10 entries are needed.
If you find yourself wanting to organize more sources, I encourage you to do just that!

At the end of class today, we will wiki-race general topics/problems.
Start in a specific discipline--click only blue links to fine tune your focus/inquiry. (copy/paste wikipedia link as your starting point: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outline_of_academic_disciplines)
Be sure to log each step in the class PADLET for this assignment. Let's see how much you have narrowed your focus after just 5 minutes of wiki-ing.

Today in class we will begin the discussion of what makes a good research question by narrowing problem statements.
You will be placed in specific (and assigned) groups and will be given a (one) discipline to work on. I will be in each breakout room helping you with this process.
Be sure ALL group members upload the Google Slide file for a grade submission.

Due:
Assigned: Wednesday, 9/1/20 - Due Sunday, 9/6/20
Reflection Task: Within the sample paper(s) you have read this week, “Manzanar” and/or “Swiss Films”, discuss the following:
- How did the student situate themselves within the discipline specific to their study?
- Did the student successfully connect their topic of inquiry to relevant scholarly works of varying disciplines/perspectives AND logically explain how the topic of inquiry addresses a gap?
Reflect on this process and how will it serve to shape your understanding of connecting varying disciplines (and their perspectives) through your research process.
Directions: PREP Journal Entries are to be a minimum of 2 paragraphs (250-300 words). Be reflective and stick to the task at hand. I have included the grading rubric (for some reason Google Classroom never lets me add it) for your reference when writing.
Due:
We will be doing a great deal of peer editing and consistent reviewing of the AP Research Academic Paper Rubric in this course.
For this assignment, choose (1) of the attached Academic Paper Examples (either "Swiss Film" or "Manzanar") and use your peer editing magic through the attached form ("Peer Review Practice_AP Research"). Provide critical feedback--after all, the more specific the grader, the more enlightened the writer.
You Peer Review is due Wednesday, 9/2 by 11:59pm.

The Last 10 minutes of class today is dedicated to this Exit Ticket. Be sure to ask any questions (even directional questions with your research discipline style) that you may have! This Exit Ticket will serve to structure the Methods I teach you all in class.
Due:
Today in class, we will start by looking at the famous QUEST poster but...differently. For this assignment, you will work in small groups to summarize the assigned letter (either a Q, U, E, S, or T), walk the class through an example of that letter, and provide a visual to best represent it. Prepare to share with the class.
Included the rest of the slides only because it will serve as a great reminder and reference point for your main focus within the course.
SUBMIT this class work at our class break.
