How might these responses to diversity shape colonial society? Would it create stronger ties to Britain or instead promote ideas of “American exceptionalism,” uniqueness and celebrations of a place where people “mingle like fish at sea?” What seemed to unite the colonies in common culture and identity and what seemed to divide them?
