Coach Phil Cantwell, originally from Los Angeles, went to Notre Dame University and coached the Mary Star Football Program from 1954-1959. He was a tough coach who knew how to make you want to play to the best of your ability. Coach Cantwell was ahead of his time. When he would come into a classroom all his players would stand up out of respect for him. He set an example to all by going to Mass every morning before school. “Hit the rail” he would say, “and trust in the Lord always, go to Mass and Communion.” Coach Cantwell was a man that you loved, hated, liked and respected. He was a great coach and had a storied coaching career in high school football at various schools in Indiana and California, including Joliet Catholic High School in Joliet, Ind., Mary Star of the Sea High School in San Pedro, Bishop Amat High School in La Puente, Inglewood High School and Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach.
