During class students work on completing the STUDY GUIDES attached below for each unit.
Due:
an image with no background (clip art work best) OR remove the background from an image (HINT: It gets SUPER cranky if the edges are not perfectly smooth; I suggest adding a Layer Mask, painting out with a HARD black brush, and then inverting the mask to select the object. You cannot animate with layer masks, so then you need to APPLY MASK to make it a rasterized layer).
If a photo with a background, DO NOT CROP until the end! (Crazy things happen)
the layer (just make sure it starts with _a_)
the layer (it's fine to leave the copy it adds at the end, just be sure it still starts with _a_)
and add "points" so you can move it around! If you don't want it taking off, put a few pins in the bottom of the person/thing. Then, add joints in the areas you want to move. If something is moving that shouldn't, put a point there so it won't).
Hit the to Apply
the layer and the process; each layer will be a frame of your animation!
the image, if needed, to remove all extra space
When finished, go to and the Animation window will appear so you can preview your animation
If you are happy, modify the settings for speed or export size, and export that puppy! Fun!

Students are introduced to ANIMATION in the digital art field by watching a short video and then learning how to create a simple frame-by-frame animation using Google Slides. For example, a flower growing, a car driving, a cat jumping. Students are to duplicate slides and moving objects slightly to simulate motion. Students first brainstorm ideas on what they would like to create as their animation by sketching out using a paper template to create a short animation.
The following steps include:
Set Up Your Slides (Open Click on Delete the default text boxes (so you have a clean slide).
Create Your First Frame (Insert an object (example: Style it! (Change the color, add a border, etc.) and Place the object at the on the slide.
Duplicate the Slide (Right-click on the slide thumbnail → Move the object on the new slide (up, down, sideways, or rotate it).
Repeat to Build Motion (Keep duplicating the latest slide), Move the object each time, The more slides you have, the smoother the animation will look!
Preview the Animation (Click (or faster!), OR: the slides and click fast through them. Tip: Set to 0 seconds if you want it to auto-animate.
Add Extra Effects (Adding (simulate environment movement), Using moving at once, Creating a (like a ball bouncing or a rocket launching).

In this assignment, students learn to face swap using Photopea. The video below is an editing tutorial that will cover some simple but important compositing techniques such as blending with layer masks, color matching and more. In the video, the download links used for the images are:
https://unsplash.com/photos/5xbCj_VWKcs and https://unsplash.com/photos/X6Uj51n5CE8. The following terms learned in this assignment are:
Head Swapping For a lot of people this means the same as face swapping i.e. generally doesn’t involve swapping out the whole head, but more like blending face features from one person to another as per this tutorial. Although swapping heads completely is definitely possible!
Face Editing - This is quite a vague term and could mean a lot of things. From funny face swaps, to makeup changes, or cleaning up skin and removing spots. Basically anything related to changing someone's face in any way.
Face retouching - This would normally include general skin clean up, removing blemishes, tidying hair, fixing makeup, correcting skin tone and more.
Students need to find two pictures to use for their face swap. Make sure to submit 3 pictures total (your two pictures of faces and then your final face swap picture).

The GRID METHOD can be used to transfer or enlarge drawings from a photo. Using a grid from a photograph allows students to create accurate and proportional drawings. Students will focus on their observational skills while incorporating the mathematical skills of measuring, drawing straight lines, and proportion in their art. For this project, students will create a collaborative class mural using the GRID METHOD that will be displayed in Fine Arts Night, as well as creating their own individual digital GRID DRAWING.
The following steps utilizing the GRID METHOD to make an INDIVIDUAL PICTURE includes:
(1) Choosing a photograph (making sure to print out as a 4"×6" photograph).
(2) Gridding your photograph (for a 4"×6" photograph grid into ½ inch by ½ inch squares). Make sure to count the number of boxes in the photograph and on the final paper so that they match!!!
(3) Number the boxes on the photograph and final paper. Make sure the numbers coordinate. For example, number 1-8 should be on the top row, and 1-12 should be on the left side row.
(4) Start drawing the contour lines of the photograph. Be sure to look at each individual box as you draw.
(5) Lastly, shade your grid drawing appropriately by utilizing a light source. Make sure to blend with a blending stump, tortillon, q-tip, paint brush, or your finger to smooth all graphite lines.
The following steps utilizing the GRID METHOD for our COLLABORATIVE PICTURE includes:
Students will use the grid method to collaboratively recreate the logo in a digital format while improving their observational and digital drawing skills. The logo will be divided into a grid where students will each receive a piece to replicate.
Once students receive their piece of the grid to replicate they need to open it up into Photopea (File Open and Place).
Students are to recreate their section while matching proportions, colors, and details.
Students outline and sketch their sections, ensuring lines and details match the original logo.
Zoom in for precision and using layers for different details (e.g., outline, color, shading).
Use color-picking techniques for consistency and refine your section, ensuring edges align with adjacent pieces.
Lastly, export your completed section in the correct resolution.

In this lesson, students learn how to design a candle mockup using digital art techniques. The focus will be on creating a realistic, appealing professional-looking candle design that can be used for product displays, marketing materials, or other creative purposes. Students will explore the use of software tools to enhance their design skills and develop an understanding of mockups as a vital component of product visualization. Students will learn an understanding of the concept of a product mockup and its role in digital design, were they create a digital candle design mockup using either Photopea (1920x1080px resolution is good for mockups), or Canva. Students gain knowledge of design principles such as composition, lighting, shadows, and texture. Student will be able to create a realistic candle mockup with digital art techniques, including layer manipulation, texture use, and lighting effects, as well as be able to export and present their candle design mockup professionally.
The following steps involve: (click the links attached to open Canva templates)
Opening up a new project: Start with a blank canvas (size depends on where the mockup will be displayed, but 1080x1080 pixels is a common choice for social media) or find a template by searching for pre-made candle mockup templates in the Canva search bar (e.g., "candle mockup").
Selecting a Template: Browse Canva’s template library and choose a candle mockup that fits the desired style (e.g., clear glass jar, metal tin). Search for candle images in the “Photos” or “Elements” section of Canva. Look for high-quality stock images that are realistic.
Making a Label or Uploading your design: Upload the candle label design (if the label has already been created) and position it on the candle. Use Canva’s alignment tools to center and position the label correctly. Apply effects such as shadows or glows to make it look more integrated into the image. Drag and resize the label image to fit onto the mockup. Use the ‘Position’ tool to center it or adjust it.
Adjusting transparency/Shadow Effects: Demonstrate how to add shadow effects to make the label look more realistic.
Refining the mockup: Add elements like backgrounds (a table, shelf, or other product display scenes) for added context. Consider adjusting lighting, brightness, and contrast to enhance the realism.
Reviewing the design: Zoom in and out to ensure the candle mockup looks realistic. Check for alignment, shadows, and reflections.
Exporting the mockup: Export the design in high resolution (e.g., PNG, JPEG). File format should be PNG with a transparent background. This is useful for certain marketing uses.

Students work on designing a self-portrait out of descriptive text with the use of various ranges of sizes and values within their text. Students have the choice to use Photopea, Canva, Adobe Express, or www.wordart.com to create their portrait. This project demonstrates utilizing VALUE going from light to dark through layering and positioning of text. The overall typography needs to use a variety of fonts and sizes within the self-portrait that features WORDS, PHRASES, or SENTENCES that will tell the viewer more about the person in the image. Therefore, students create a mesh of words (like a word cloud of text) that creates a portrait design filled with custom text. Students can use an original photograph, pick their own colors or create custom colors and choose how they want the text to fill the portrait. To take a photo of yourself with the camera, please use the following link below for access to your camera. Students can use a photograph of themselves, or someone else as a guide for placement of text. A link below is for copyright free images if students do not want to use their own picture. There's a link attached below for www.WordArt.com if you'd like to use that takes you to their website to create your design. A YouTube video link is attached below if you may need more guidance.

A new year is upon us! With a new year, comes new goals, new “one words” that will drive our focus and intentions for the upcoming year, and a renewed feeling of doing things right, growth, and advancement! All across the world, people create vision boards. Just ask Steve Harvey and Oprah! People search on Pinterest and Google images for quotes and pictures that will serve as visual representations of their goals for the new year. They print out pictures and quotes and mount them onto poster board, and then hang them in their bedrooms or bathrooms so they can see them each and every day. Some save them as their screen savers on their iPhones, or computer desktops to help them keep visually focused on their goals. Having this visual representation of your goals hanging somewhere where you can see it forces you to look at it every day. It plants your goals in your mind and keeps them at the forefront of all that you do. This assignment is for you to create your own 2025 vision board using either Google Slides, Google Drawings, CANVA, Adobe Express, or Photopea. Steps include the following:
Use the worksheets below to help guide you in figuring out what your 2024 focus is.

This contest is open to California residents in grades K-12. There are five grade categories for awards in both art and poetry: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Entries must have a California coastal or ocean theme. For example, no tropical or arctic settings or species. Art does not need to depict specific places or species, but if it does, they must be California places and species. Meaning, learn about California native species first because a fish is just a "fish," but if it's a recognizable type of fish you need to make sure it's a Californian fish. Also, for example, if you submit a poem about "the beach," please don't submit one about Waikiki Beach.
Winners will be selected for art and poetry in each of the five grade categories; winners will receive a $100 gift certificate to an art supply store (art), courtesy of Blick Art Materials, or a bookstore (poetry), and tickets to Aquarium of the Pacific, courtesy of the Aquarium. Each winner's teacher (named on the Entry Form) will receive a $50 gift certificate for educational supplies from Acorn Naturalists. In addition, multiple honorable mentions may be selected. If a poem is a reference to an existing poem (or song, or other work), that poem and poet should be named on the entry.
Artists should include a short statement of a paragraph or less describing their inspiration for the artwork. If needed, this can be dictated to or translated by the teacher, parent, or other helper. (Please make a note if that's the case, and include the original text if translated.) Any art entry that has been traced from or is a digital alteration of an existing photo or image that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules. AI-generated art submissions violate competition rules. If using an image created by someone else (of an animal, for example) as a model for an art entry, student's artwork must be significantly different to avoid plagiarism. No hands other than the student's own should be involved in the creation of artwork. Students may enter multiple pieces but must complete a separate entry form for each one. Winners will be contacted directly and announced on this website by early April. Sign up to receive an email announcement. If a winner, artwork will be kept by the Coastal Commission for approximately one year as part of a traveling public exhibit.
Read the contest guidelines by clicking the link below. Create your art or poetry. Enter your digital artwork for the contest (via email) and post your submission here under this assignment as a .png to receive full points. Please submit your work online no later than January 31, 2025 by 5:00pm.

Every year as the clock nears midnight on December 31st, millions of people dream about what the new year will bring. A new year brings the hope of possibilities and a fresh start, and many of us make New Year’s resolutions and share them with others. We vow to lose weight, to spend more quality time with family, or to volunteer more often. Some resolutions we accomplish and others we don’t. Still, there is joy in the dreaming. You can make your resolutions SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. ...BUT, the concept is to NOT think of one particular thing that you'd be doing changing, or doing differently, or basically what you'd be giving up. But, to take on a New Year's Resolution approach to more as a THEME for the year.
. . .Therefore, this assignment is for you to create a poster of your New Year's resolution by using either Google Drawings, Canva, Google Slides, Adobe Express, or Photopea. First, you will need to fill out the following "New Year's resolution - 2025" Google Slides below. Then, you'll create your own poster using any of the platforms listed above. Your poster should reflect your THEME for this new year.

Students digitally Design a Black Friday Advertisement for a target demographic using Photopea. Students first research what they plan to create as their demographic target market by filling out a planning Sheet of their CONCEPT & DESIGN in Google Classroom. Next, students research online to find pictures and then begin on designing their LAYOUT for their advertisement. This project includes students using their prior knowledge of PhotoPea where they are familiar with the following: CREATING TEXT, CREATING & TRANSFORMING SHAPES, PLACING IMAGES, LAYERING MASKS, & ADJUSTING LAYERS.
Due:
This project involves students being introduced to digital “cut files” (.svg) in Photopea. Students learn how to design and edit .svg files (scalable vector graphic files). Steps include students tracing their design, converting their design into a vector image, resizing the artboard as needed, fine-tuning their design and exporting their files as .svg files. Students first watch a short video on how to make a layered cross. Students learn how to design and create their own layered cross by downloading .svg files in layers utilizing Photopea. Students will need to brainstorm their design by researching online different .svg cut files for their cross and sketching out their design on paper. For the week, each day students work on designing the layers of their cross for a minimum of 4 layers that will then be cut out in colored cardstock paper. Afterwards, students can adjust their designs if needed. The final project will then be assemble together with foam tape in between each layer. Students have the option to either create a layered cross, or a lighted shadow box. By following the steps, you'll be able to design a layered paper cross in Photopea, export it as SVG files for cutting, and create a beautiful, layered paper craft.
Summary of Steps:
1. Create a new document and draw the basic cross shape using the Rectangle Tool.
2. Duplicate and resize the layers to create the depth of the paper layers.
3. Use the Polygonal Lasso Tool or Pen Tool to add paper-cut effects and jagged edges to each layer.
4. Convert layers to vector shapes if needed for cutting accuracy.
5. Export each layer as a separate SVG file for cutting.
6. Upload the SVG files to your cutting machine software and cut the layers.
7. Assemble the layers into a 3D paper cross.

For this lesson, students are to follow along with the directions in the attached Google Slides. Students are to use the free online drawing application of Photopea (https://www.photopea.com/). The objective is for students to use a mouse or drawing stylus, where they explore Photopea's online tools to independently create a dog tracing. Students are to find a free image of a dog, or use one of their own photos to trace over. The canvas will be white and the brush color will be black. Once students have finished tracing over their dog, students need to click on their original picture and click on the eye icon to turn off that layer. Lastly, students need to make their last adjustments on their cartoon dog drawing before they Export and Save as a PNG to upload here under this assignment. Key vocabulary terms include students learning the following: File, Keyboard, Command, Trace, Brush, Eraser, Paint Bucket, Width, Height, Create, and Window.

The visual style of the Atari, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, and early computer graphics influenced — and continue to influence — millions of creative minds. Pixel art draws on that influence of earlier years and brings us nostalgia. Modern graphical resolution is better than anything compared to earlier gaming systems offered, but the particular aesthetics and emotional association of the pixelated style still have appeal. Pixel Art is a form of digital art that focuses on one thing, the humble square shaped pixel. Your computer monitor, or smart phone has a liquid crystal display (LCD). LCD screens are made up of thousands of pixels. Pixels are the tiny squares that change color in response to the image displayed on your screen. If you squint hard enough, you might even be able to see them. When video games became popular in the 1980’s, computer game developers only had a limited number of pixels and colors to work with. These technological limitations are why the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation of video game characters looked ‘blocky’. For this assignment, you are to design your own pixel art character.
First you will need some graph paper to brainstorm. Then, you will have to decide what character you’d like to create. For example, you can create an emoji or illustrate characters from Star Wars, Pokemon, Minecraft, Mario Bros like Mario or Luigi, Steve from Minecraft, Charizard or Pikachu from Pokémon, Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, Bowser, Ralph from Wreck It Ralph etc. Some picture examples are included below. Next, you will create it digitally with https://www.pixilart.com/draw?ref=home-page or https://www.brik.co/pages/brikbuild (this website does not allow you to save your work though). You also can use Excel Spreadsheets here in G.C.. Please see video attached below. Afterwards, you are to save your design as a as ‘.pixel’ file on their computer and then also download your final image as a ‘.png’ file.
The following instructions are for Google Sheets (Excel Spreadsheet):
To make pixel art you have to:
Sign in to your Google account.
Create a new spreadsheet and Rename it.
Resize all cells to form a grid.
Search for spreadsheet pixel art.
Customize your search and filter your results if needed.
Open your selected image in a new browser tab.
Select all the cells in your spreadsheet.
Create a conditional formatting rule for each color in your image.
Check your conditional formatting rules by adding numbers to cells.
Open the conditional formatting rules to see your color values.
Add values to color cells in your spreadsheet.
Complete your image.
Select a custom range for your background.
Add a new rule to set a background color.
Revise the conditional formatting rules to match text colors to fill colors.
Remove the gridlines from your spreadsheet.
