Designing a Tattoo (Canva) in Google Classroom

Designing a Tattoo (Canva)

Students learn the art of tattooing along with navigating Canva.com as a digital method to make art. Students’ previous learning about the history of tattoos helps them to brainstorm their own tattoo designs. Once students determine their design from their drawings, students are to then design on Canva.com where they will download and upload to print out their temporary tattoos onto tattoo paper to apply onto themselves. Next, students are to design a tattoo for a client (another student) using the following rubric below.

Simple GIF Animation - Photopea: Puppet Warp

an image with no background (cliparts work best) OR remove the background from an image (HINT: It gets SUPER cranky if the edges are not perfectly smooth; I suggest adding a Layer Mask, painting out with a HARD black brush, and then inverting the mask to select the object. You cannot animate with layer masks, so then you need to APPLY MASK to make it a rasterized layer).
If a photo with a background, DO NOT CROP until the end! (Crazy things happen)
the layer  (just make sure it starts with _a_)
the layer (it's fine to leave the copy it adds at the end, just be sure it still starts with _a_)
and add "points" so you can move it around!  If you don't want it taking off, put a few pins in the bottom of the person/thing. Then, add joints in the areas you want to move. If something is moving that shouldn't, put a point there so it won't).
Hit the to Apply
the layer and the process; each layer will be a frame of your animation!
the image, if needed, to remove all extra space
When finished, go to  and the Animation window will appear so you can preview your animation
If you are happy, modify the settings for speed or export size, and export that puppy! Fun!

Pixel Art - Diamond Painting (Google Sheets) in Google Classroom

Pixel Art - Diamond Painting (Google Sheets)

The visual style of the Atari, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, and early computer graphics influenced — and continue to influence — millions of creative minds. Pixel art draws on that influence of earlier years and brings us nostalgia. Modern graphical resolution is better than anything compared to earlier gaming systems offered, but the particular aesthetics and emotional association of the pixelated style still have appeal. For this assignment you are to create your own pixel art composition using Google Sheets. Then, you will create a "diamond painting" from your pixel artwork.

To make pixel art you have to:

Sign in to your Google account.
Create a new spreadsheet and Rename it.
Resize all cells to form a grid.
Search for spreadsheet pixel art.
Customize your search and filter your results if needed.
Open your selected image in a new browser tab.
Select all the cells in your spreadsheet.
Create a conditional formatting rule for each color in your image.
Check your conditional formatting rules by adding numbers to cells.
Open the conditional formatting rules to see your color values.
Add values to color cells in your spreadsheet.
Complete your image.
Select a custom range for your background.
Add a new rule to set a background color.
Revise the conditional formatting rules to match text colors to fill colors.
Remove the gridlines from your spreadsheet.
Revise the conditional formatting rules to match text colors to fill colors.
Lastly, this project will need to be printed out to attach the Diamond Painting "drills" over it to finish your artwork. This is a very time-consuming project. So, please take your time and do your best work. Links are attached below for guidance.

GRID DRAWING (Individual & Collaborative Project) in Google Classroom

GRID DRAWING (Individual & Collaborative Project)

The GRID METHOD can be used to transfer or enlarge drawings from a photo. Using a grid from a photograph allows students to create accurate and proportional drawings. Students will focus on their observational skills while incorporating the mathematical skills of measuring, drawing straight lines, and proportion in their art. For this project, students will create a collaborative class mural using the GRID METHOD that will be displayed in Fine Arts Night next month, as well as creating their own individual digital GRID DRAWING.

The following steps utilizing the GRID METHOD include:
(1) Choosing a photograph (making sure to print out as a 4"×6" photograph).
(2) Gridding your photograph (for a 4"×6" photograph grid into ½ inch by ½ inch squares). Make sure to count the number of boxes in the photograph and on the final paper so that they match!!!
(3) Number the boxes on the photograph and final paper. Make sure the numbers coordinate. For example, number 1-8 should be on the top row, and 1-12 should be on the left side row.
(4) Start drawing the contour lines of the photograph. Be sure to look at each individual box as you draw.
(5) Lastly, shade your grid drawing appropriately by utilizing a light source. Make sure to blend with a blending stump, tortillon, q-tip, paint brush, or your finger to smooth all graphite lines.

TYPOGRAPHY Portrait - Photopea, Canvas, Adobe Express, or www.WordArt.com in Google Classroom

TYPOGRAPHY Portrait - Photopea, Canvas, Adobe Express, or www.WordArt.com

Students work on designing a self-portrait out of descriptive text from use of various ranges of values within their text. Students have the choice to use Photopea, Canva, Adobe Express, or  www.wordart.com to create their portrait. This project demonstrates utilizing VALUE going from light to dark through layering and positioning of text. Students use a photograph of themselves, or someone else as a guide for placement of text. The overall text needs to use a variety of fonts and sizes within the self-portrait that features WORDS, PHRASES, and SENTENCES that will tell the viewer more about the person in the image. Therefore, students create a sort of word cloud of text that creates a portrait design filled with custom text. Students use an original photograph, pick their own colors or create custom colors and choose how they want the text to fill the portrait. There's a link attached below for www.WordArt.com if you'd like to use that takes you to their website to create your design. A YouTube video link is attached below if you may need more guidance. Vision Board - for New Year 2024 in Google Classroom

Vision Board - for New Year 2024

A new year is upon us! With a new year, comes new goals, new “one words” that will drive our focus and intentions for the upcoming year, and a renewed feeling of doing things right, growth, and advancement! All across the world, people create vision boards. Just ask Steve Harvey and Oprah! People search on Pinterest and Google images for quotes and pictures that will serve as visual representations of their goals for the new year. They print out pictures and quotes and mount them onto poster board, and then hang them in their bedrooms or bathrooms so they can see them each and every day. Some save them as their screen savers on their iPhones, or computer desktops to help them keep visually focused on their goals. Having this visual representation of your goals hanging somewhere where you can see it forces you to look at it every day. It plants your goals in your mind and keeps them at the forefront of all that you do. This assignment is for you to create your own 2024 vision board using either Google Slides, Google Drawings, CANVA, Adobe Express, or Photopea. Steps include the following:
Use the worksheets below to help guide you in figuring out what your 2024 focus is.
Make a word cloud image to add to your vision board by clicking the word art generator below.
Go through the Google Slide presentation to look at examples.
Choose if you'd like to use Google Slides, Google Drawings, CANVA, Adobe Express, or Photopea for your vision board.
Add your 2024 Poster Theme that you created in yesterday's class to it.

California Coastal Commission Art & Poetry Contest in Google Classroom

California Coastal Commission Art & Poetry Contest

This contest is open to California residents in grades K-12. There are five grade categories for awards in both art and poetry: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Entries must have a California coastal or ocean theme. For example, no tropical or arctic settings or species. Art does not need to depict specific places or species, but if it does, they must be California places and species. Meaning, learn about California native species first because a fish is just a "fish," but if it's a recognizable type of fish you need to make sure it's a Californian fish. Also, for example, if you submit a poem about "the beach," please don't submit one about Waikiki Beach.

Winners will be selected for art and poetry in each of the five grade categories; winners will receive a $100 gift certificate to an art supply store (art), courtesy of Blick Art Materials, or a bookstore (poetry), and tickets to Aquarium of the Pacific, courtesy of the Aquarium. Each winner's teacher (named on the Entry Form) will receive a $50 gift certificate for educational supplies from Acorn Naturalists. In addition, multiple honorable mentions may be selected.  If a poem is a reference to an existing poem (or song, or other work), that poem and poet should be named on the entry.

Artists should include a short statement of a paragraph or less describing their inspiration for the artwork. If needed, this can be dictated to or translated by the teacher, parent, or other helper. (Please make a note if that's the case, and include the original text if translated.) Any art entry that has been traced from or is a digital alteration of an existing photo or image that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules. AI-generated art submissions violate competition rules. If using an image created by someone else (of an animal, for example) as a model for an art entry, student's artwork must be significantly different to avoid plagiarism. No hands other than the student's own should be involved in the creation of artwork. Students may enter multiple pieces but must complete a separate entry form for each one. Winners will be contacted directly and announced on this website by early April. Sign up to receive an email announcement. If a winner, artwork will be kept by the Coastal Commission for approximately one year as part of a traveling public exhibit.

Layered Cross - .svg files in Photopea

This project involves students being introduced to digital “cut files” (.svg) in Photopea. Students watch a short video and then are shown how to make a layered cross. Students learn how to design and create their own layered cross by downloading .svg files in layers utilizing Photopea. Students first brainstorm their design by researching online different .svg cut files for their cross. For the week, each day students work on designing the layers of their cross for a total of 6 layers that will then be cut out in colored paper using a CRICUT machine as a prototype. Afterwards, students can adjust their designs if needed. The final project will then be cut out in thin balsa wood for each layer with a laser printer. Students then assemble their layered crosses with glue.

You are to transform an image (i.e.: an object, animal or scene) into various colored shapes to create a stained glass effect from a picture you've chosen online. Some examples are below with directions for guidance.

Basic steps include:
Creating a Google Drawing and setting up the background to be black by right clicking inside the canvas.
Next, inserting your photo that you chose to transform by clicking the "insert image" button and choosing a photo.
Thirdly, you are to use any of the "Shape" tools or the "Polyline" tool to cover the image with quadrilaterals, triangles, or any other shapes that help fit the desired picture. Once a shape is made, you can use the "color fill" button to choose a color to fill in as a solid, or can even choose as well a variety of gradients. You need to leave some space in between your shapes so that the black background can show through. Basically, creating a black outline around each shape. When filling the color in each shape try to match the portion of the image that it is covering on your picture.
Lastly, click on your inserted image to then delete the original image so that you just have your colored glass over the black background completing your stained glass art. Post your original photo along with your new stained glass image here in Google Classroom to receive full points.

How to design and print your own die cut sticker using www.Canva.com
You can either start off by choosing a free sticker template from Canva's large library of designs, or start your own design with a blank template. First off, if you upload your own images, illustrations, graphic elements, or just adjust a pre-made one of Canva's, you only need to add a few effects to create a die cut sticker. Steps include:
Clicking on your image, to then click "Edit." From the "Edit" selections you'll see several filters.
You'll need to click on the "Shadow" effect.
Then, adjust "Transparency."
After that, you'll need to click "Outline" and adjust the size so that you have an outline around your design (whether it be a picture or font as well). Make sure to then click the color to white instead of keeping it black.
Then, you're done designing your first sticker! You'll need to design several stickers to fill an entire page. So, start getting creative! ...Don't forget to save your designs, then click the "Share" button to download it and then upload it into Google Classroom. To preview your design, click on the “Download” button and select “PDF Print” from the dropdown menu. In the PDF options panel, make sure that the “Trim Marks” and “Bleed” options are selected. This will add crop marks and bleed to your design, which will help the printer align and cut your design accurately. I will print your full page out and cut the sheet of stickers out with my Cricut die cutting machine for you.
